Date:2024-03-25Editor:10

Aimed at responding to Global Open Development Strategy 2.0 of Zhejiang University, a project theming on Meeting with Electricity, Exploring Carbon Development was launched by the College of Electrical Engineering this winter vacation, serving as a distinguishing paradigm of the College in an endeavor to make a substantive development on an increasingly international scale and by actively promoting exchange visits establish diverse academic platforms for students to enhance their global competence.

Led by Associate Professor Guo Qing and Teacher Chen Longxuan, students of the Edison Class of 2022 signed up for the project and as a team embarked on a 6-day journey to Macau and Hong Kong for academic purposes. In the project, the team visited five prestigious universities and two power-related enterprises, engaging in ardent discussions with numerous professors, corporate executives, as well as alumni in Macau and Hong Kong.

The first stop was the University of Macau, where the team met with Associate Professor Hui Hongxun, an alumnus of the Edison Experimental Class of 2011. He led the group through a tour of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, which was established by the President of Macau University, Professor Song Yonghua, who notably was previously the Executive Vice-Chancellor of Zhejiang University. Through a tour of the lab that focuses on cutting-edge research in urban disaster prevention, smart transportation, smart energy, and public safety management, students have acquired an in-depth understanding of the pioneering research in related fields.

The following campus tour at the University of Macau also awed the visiting team. It raised feelings of warmth and cordiality in them, for the enthusiastic introduction given by their senior as well as the similar school layout and architectural style of the university. As they strolled through the campus, students resonated with shared similarities and experienced the synchronous development between the Macao region and their motherland.

At Macau Power Company Limited, engineers briefed the students on the company's profile, the current state of the power system in Macau, and strategies to align with China's Dual Carbon goals. Following the presentations, students engaged in hot topics such as the Macau electricity market and the status of the electric vehicle industry development. They later toured the control center of the power plant to gain firsthand experience of power system operations and delved into issues related to disaster response capabilities and offshore wind power development in Macau.

At Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Wang Wei, Professor of Computer and Engineering, gave the visiting team an overview of the university, followed by multiple research shares. Professor Li Mo presented IoT studies, Professor Guo Song's team shared insights on edge AI, and Associate Professor He Junxian shed light on natural language processing. These research explorations have greatly sparked interest in students, which was then reflected by their intense questions during interactive sessions. Additionally, the team toured the HKUST campus, which faces the sea and is backed by mountains, creating an idyllic landscape that combines natural beauty with white architectural elements.

At the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Associate Professor Wang Qin from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering showcased frontier research and elaborated the application for postgraduate programs and scholarships. He also guided the students through the laboratory, allowing them to appreciate the unique modern style and vibrant atmosphere.

At the University of Hong Kong, Associate Professor Huang Zhiyi provided students with an overall introduction, while Associate Professors Zhao Hengshuang and Wu Chenshu respectively shared their research on computer vision and WiFi signal-based image recognition technologies. Under the guidance of ZJU alumna and current HKU Ph.D. student Shen Siting, the team toured the historic and picturesque campus and its innovative Innovation

Wing.

At the City University of Hong Kong, a research team led by Associate Professor Li Zhejiang from the Department of Computer Science hosted the visit, showcasing the latest research findings in areas involving improvements of eye movement model and memory allocation techniques, which address efficiency enhancements and sustainable development.

The team concluded their visits with ASMPT Technology Corporation, a renowned high-tech enterprise in Hong Kong. Here, senior R&D Manager Li Xianlin welcomed the students. ASMPT's Vice President Peter first provided an all-around introduction to the company, while the R&D director and experts shared insights into the frontiers of fields concerning semiconductor manufacturing and packaging, smart factories, and other practical applications. Students had the opportunity to experience cutting-edge technologies displayed at the innovation center, gaining enlightenment about the philosophy of ASMPT's slogan enabling the digital world. The visit ended with the story of personal career growth from Li Xianlin, who was also an alumnus of ZJU Electrical Engineering, which therefore further opened up possibilities for the students' future paths.

For the participants from the Edison Class, the exchange program has put flesh on the integrated ecosystem of education, research, and industrialization in Macau and Hong Kong and helped clarify students' future directions and set solid foundations for their academic and professional growth.
